Every Month we will strive to give a threat assessment of the new drugs that are on the streets and threaten our youth. This month we are covering one of the newest threats: Flakka. Flakka is a new street drug that has some scary side effects. The drug itself has been described as a mix between PCP, LSD, and meth.

With a low dose, Flakka is a heavy stimulant with mild hallucinations. However, some of the worse cases that have been documented are not a low dose. They are heavy doses that render the person unable to communicate in an intelligent matter. Like Cocaine and Meth, Flakka releases the feel-good chemicals in the brain. These are naturally created chemicals Dopamine, and norepinephrine. This drug also prevents neurons from being able to absorb the Dopamine and the norepinephrine. That means that the effects of the drug may last longer than what was originally anticipated.

Where the danger lies for users, and those around them is the incredible potency of the drug. A typical dose is generally .1 grams. However, just a little bit more will trigger adverse side effects. Those can range from extreme psychosis, heart problems, severe aggression, and even death. Flakka is incredibly addictive as well. This will cause users to want to use another dose shortly after their first dose, and that often leads to overdose. User's often mentioned an inability to think, and experience delirium. A users body will overheat and can reach a temperature of 105℉. The drug also triggers a fight or flight response in users. This an adrenaline-fueled natural response that will make a user want to run or fight if they perceive they are being confronted. With the drug boosting the natural response it makes a user unpredictable and potentially dangerous to themselves or others. Police are generally called, however, it can take as many as 5 or 6 officers to get a person under the influence of this drug restrained. After the person is restrained, emergency responders try to counteract the drug by injecting a sedative into the person. If the sedative does not work, the person can die. Over the course of the last 8 months, 10 people have died from Flakka overdose.

Flakka is usually purchased in bulk from online sources located in other countries such as China. It is then shipped to the purchaser who normally will sell it one the street for roughly $5 a gram. This can be a very lucrative turnaround. The average price to purchase in bu;l is about $1,500 per kilogram. Dealers can often get around $50,000 from their initial investment if they have a network of dealers working for them. Evidence suggests that this is a relatively recent trend that people are experimenting with Flakka. In 2010, 699 samples tested positive. In 2013 there were 16,500 samples that tested positive. It is also worth mention that between September 2014 and December 2015 61 people died from Flakka overdoses in Broward County, Florida.
